Five A Day
The government recommends that we eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Fresh, frozen, chilled, canned, 100% pure juice and dried fruit and vegetables all count towards the Five A Day target and the following measures give you an idea of what makes up a portion
- Vegetables – three tablespoons
- Salad – one dessert bowl
- Small fruit, e.g. plums, apricots, satsumas – two fruit
- Medium fruit, e.g. banana, orange – one fruit
- Very large fruit, e.g. melon, pineapple – one large slice
- Raspberries, strawberries, grapes – one cupful
- Fresh fruit salad, cooked or canned fruit – two to three tablespoons
- Dried fruit – half to one tablespoon
- Fruit or vegetable juice – one glass (150ml)
Fruit juice only counts as one portion, no matter how much is drunk in a day.
