New age discrimination law comes into effect
Woman

Employees approaching retirement age, applying for promotions and secondments, or requesting training will all benefit from a new age discrimination law.

As of 1 October 2006, it became illegal in Britain for companies to discriminate against employees because of their age, whether young or old. Employees may now request the right to work beyond the age of 65. Britvic guidelines have been drawn up for line managers, with HR support.

But the legislation isn’t just about policies. All employees must be considerate of their language, as comments such as “he’s past it” or “she’s too young to do that job” may now be considered discriminatory.

Dawn Smith, HR advisor, says: ‘All of Britvic’s policies have been reviewed to make sure the company is acting in line with the new rules. Britvic is committed to ensuring all employees are treated with fairness, dignity and respect.’
